Society for Molecular Biology & Evolution 2022 Meeting

Nau mai, haere mai, Welcome!

We are excited to invite you to the Society of Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) annual conference to be held onsite in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland in Aotearoa / New Zealand from 10-14 July 2022. This conference will be the first opportunity in two years for many of us to reconnect and to build new relationships (whanaungatanga, in our Indigenous language, Māori).

Inspired by our beautiful landscape and unique biota, Aotearoa New Zealand has a rich history of molecular evolutionary research, and a vibrant research community in molecular evolution and computational biology.

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most diverse city, with a population of 1.6 million. It is a multicultural city, with around 160 languages spoken. It is also a Pacific city, housing the largest Māori and Polynesian populations in the world. The city is nestled on an isthmus in the north of the country, surrounded by harbours and native broadleaf forests and fringed by wild black-sand beaches to the south west and the beautiful protected waters of the Hauraki Gulf to the north east.

Our conference venue at the University of Auckland is just a short walk from downtown Auckland, popular attractions and major public transport hubs.

We have managed COVID-19 well as a nation, and anticipate that our borders will reopen in time for SMBE 2022. Auckland is easily accessible from overseas, with a modern, efficient international airport and direct flights from many Asian and Pacific rim locations. Residents from 60 countries around the world do not need to apply for a visa into New Zealand.

Auckland’s Polynesian character—including its unique Māori culture—is a major attraction for international visitors, and there is an abundance of exciting activities and adventures on Auckland’s doorstep.

We are committed to an inclusive, diverse and child-friendly congress that showcases the best research in molecular biology and evolution from around the world, as well as featuring the best New Zealand and Auckland have to offer, from culture to science to our natural assets. We are ready to host an exceptional event in Auckland for SMBE 2022 and very much look forward to extending manaakitanga – the uniquely Aotearoa New Zealand way of giving and making people feel welcome.
